Selecting Images for Designing a Painting Composition

Hello Judith Reidy,

How to select Images, scenes, setups that make it easier to compose a painting?

In classes I really want students to feel confident with their dreams and to learn how to create them. Selecting an image for a painting for a beginning painter can be a real stumbling block to early success. You may have seen something that was really cool. to you, photographed and then tried using it as the basis for a painting. It has been my experience that sometimes that experience for a painter can be exceedingly discouraging. You look at the image, and you cant' see where the shapes are, where they begin and end. You can't discern a pattern for the eye to follow.

Let me make it clear, any scene, setup or image can be the basis for a painting, but not every image, scene or setup makes for an easy compositional design. I have created a short series of videos that help you select an image that makes it easier to compose a painting.

What colors can I use in a Portrait? Huh

Hello Judith Reidy,

In view of the kind of light and scene, discover the best medium for the intended painting so you can create the impact you want according to light, mid and dark tones.

I really wanted to give my grandnephew's mother a portrait of her son who was coming up on his 1st Birthday.I wanted those rosey cheeks, but I just wasn't sure how to use color hues and values to structure the head without losing those rosey cheeks. Mixing and matching hues seemed so random.

And I was random until I broke down the structure of the child's head which was seen in my mind like a ball. I thought in terms of darks, halftones, and lights Now what paints should I select and mix up as I considered these different values and placements on the head.I started doing some research and discovered that there were any number of colors I could potentially use and mix together to get the skin tones I wanted. But which combinations of paints should I select?

The Truth is, " no rules in art apart from learning a few basics!"

Hello Judith Reidy,

How can you find out there are no rules for what you paint in art apart from learning a few basics like what paints and brushes are best and why so then you can paint with freedom and confidence. Do YOU BELIEVE that?

Did you know there is this tension between play and process when creating art?Processes sometimes get us going and give us a general path.But often happy surprises occur and we miss them if we are too focused on process/ procedure. Being able to value, assess and utilize happy accidents is a big part of our training as artists

In some sense If we just keep to a few basics in mixing colors and understand the dynamics created with value, we leave ourselves open to learning and developing more technical know how in the face of what we might prematurely called mistakes.

Part of your ability to see happy accidents as opportunities, depends on how open you are to variations on your plan.

Do you like playing with variations on your plan? How far can you stray from your plan and feel comfortable with that on your painting journey?
