How to make a House Portrait Painting: Part 1 Solving the Problem of Poor Photo Resources

  Watch the Video Presentation Below

Part 1 Solving the Problem of Poor Photo Resources

Accomplished but still Learning

Even though I am a trained artist who paints, works in glass and other media, I have a lot of fun learning ahead  of me in making instructional videos!

The purpose of this video presentation was
to show you  how to solve the problems arising from poor photo resources

Yes,  I know how to paint and though I have professional degree training which resulted in a bonified  BFA, I feel I really did not learn the creative process of painting and playing with media until I kept applying what I thought I learned and practiced repeated failures and then I finally began teaching myself through self-analysis and and exposure to a wide and varied number of other artists and tradesmen.  I observed their tenacity.  Their joy and love of creation.  Their optimism.  So even though I can now execute a  painting project with some measure of facility, every time I begin a new venture, whether it was with fused glass or pottery, I am prepared for another adventure filled with instructive "failures."  So it is with recording live video presentations, I make silly mistakes and do funny things. This video has an assortment.

Video Faux Paw

The video was fun to make in spite of of the fact that I keep squinting to see the computer screen tabs and that a section where I was showing you images in Photoshop the app would not record. ( I now know I cant use the Photoshop app in a demo.)

The Purpose:

How to make a House Portrait Painting from Poor Photos

However you still can get the jest of the process I am going through in preparing to make this painting from a series of poor photos.  Also I have a bit at the end about my teaching schedule coming up in 2018.

I appreciate your patience.  But as I say to you we will never learn unless we are willing to fail and make mistakes and then move on.

Just an Update on Live Painting session and Teaching Schedual for 2018

I will be creating my first live zoom  painting session in the next few days.  Because I am watching my Granddaughter as well I can only announce shortly before when the session will occur, at which time you will be sent a link with the time.   In this Zoom session I will be explaining the process I have when working on a commission landscape painting which I will actually be doing.  You can watch it live and ask questions or you can watch the recorded session later when I post it.

In either case I will be talking about my planned teaching schedule for 2018 during the zoom painting session.  So I hope you have the opportunity to get the scoop as I am limiting the number of students I will be teaching....two per class. Only those who register and pay up front will be guaranteed a spot.

Happy Painting!

Judith Shares Lesson 4, Part 1 Drawing -Two Tips for Accurate Drawing from Lfe from Richard Robinson

I know drawing from nature ...life can be Challenging so I am always
for excellent ideas to simplify the process.

This morning I found an excellent Tip from Richard Robinson on YouTube.

Wherever you are if you are not painting you can be drawing.  So Practice!

Here it goes.

First Way  Measure with your arm fully extended with brush or pencil perpendicular to you.

Hold your brush  or pencil out full length in front of you perpendicular to you.
Then turning your body toward the shape you want to draw tilt you brush (pencil) to follow the  angle of the edge of the form.

Without tilting your arm move your body to face the canvas or paper  concentrate and  continue holding the tilt of the brush (pencil) as you move toward your foundation.

Paint or draw that angle.

Second way  Think clock

Ask your self if the angle is at what clock time 1, 3,  10 etc.
Then draw  a line at that angle.

Watch this video to see this demonstrated.....

Make sure you read and watch the lesson and then practice on 5 drawings or paintings  with these techniques before you answer the questions for this lesson below.

Lesson 3, Part 2- Principles of Design

Last week we reviewed the elements of design.   This week we will look at the principles that describe and effect the compositional power of the respective elements.
In class we  discussed these principles.  Also the book "You Can Do It" by Tony Couch gives an explaination of these principles in operation.
